FIRST EVER ART SHOW AND FUNDRAISER AT TEXAS SURF MUSEUM — Wondered why the Texas Surf Museum in Corpus Christi was closed this week? Curators have been getting ready for the grand opening tomorrow of the museum's first ever combined art show and fundraiser.

"Groundswell: Aesthetic Visions," opens Saturday, Oct. 26 with art auctions and party from 6 to 9 p.m. at the museum. Tickets for 7 to 9 p.m. are $5 each. If you buy a VIP ticket for $30, you get in early at 6 p.m. for a sneak preview and extra freebees. The silent auction closes and the live auction begins at 8:30 p.m. Local band, the Blind Owls, will provide entertainment. Food and drink available.

Charity hangs 10

The beauty of this combined event is enjoying the art and giving to a good cause. Proceeds from the live and silent auctions will go to help a young, injured surfer in Mexico with his medical bills, says volunteer coordinator Richard Dobson, a local construction company owner.

"He's a local guy who got in a car accident a few years ago and he's paralyzed," Dobson said, explaining that the 28-year-old, Alejandra Alex Sanchez Hernandez, is destitute and would not get proper medical care without the help of his surfing buddies. The charity is called "Get a Waterman Back in the Water," which is the ultimate goal of the medical care.

"He's doing great so far," says Dobson. "His left arm is working great and his right arm is starting to move. We want to help keep that progress going."

You can find out more about Alex on the charity's Facebook page.

Works on display include the piece used for the promotional poster (shown here), done by Wade Koniakowsky, who also helped curate the show. His piece, which is a limited edition print on canvas (22X30) with gallery wrap edge, will be up for auction. It is one of only 10 made. Another 15 world class surf artists with Texas or Gulf Coast roots will have their work on on display though July 2014.

Tickets to the event are available by calling Surf Club Records at (361) 882-2364 (they take Visa, Mastercard & Discover). You can buy tickets at Surf Club Records, at the door the night of the event or at several other businesses in the Coastal Bend area, including Board House Surf and Skate in Port Aransas and Wind and Wave Surf Shop in Corpus Christi. For more information visit the Texas Surf Museum's Facebook page (go ahead and "like" it while you're there!). Even better — put Saturday, Oct. 26 on your calendar now!
