[image id="9210" title="adopt-a-beach" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-18464" width="300" height="141" ]ADOPT-A-BEACH COMPETITION AT PADRE ISLAND NATIONAL SEASHORE — All the teams are filled and set for the first ever beach cleanup & treasure hunt on Saturday, Nov. 2 at the Padre Island National Seashore. A competitive, 4-wheel drive excursion, the cleanup and treasure hunt are part of the Texas General Land Office's Adopt-a-Beach program.
The action begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Malaquite Visitor Center at the national seashore, and will continue until 1:30. Lunch is included in the tax-deductible $20 entry fee. Contestants must be 18 years or older.
The fee also includes a T-shirt, various prizes and giveaways and transportation from Padre Island National Seashore Visitors Center to the beach and back.
Popular program expands
Because of the popularity of Adopt-a-Beach cleanups, the land office has expanded the program to include the following areas:
- Sea Rim State Park — Jefferson County
- Galveston Island State Park — Galveston County
- Mustang Island State Park — Nueces County
- Padre Island National Seashore — Kleberg County
- Andy Bowie Park, Edwin Atwood Park or Isla Blanca Park — Cameron County
Anyone interested in organizing a special beach cleanup, can contact the land office with the following information:
- Date of proposed cleanup
- Number of participants
- Time of day and duration of cleanup (for example, 9 a.m. to noon)
- Location of cleanup (chosen from site list above)
Volunteer clean up groups are asked to donate a minimum of $50 to the Adopt-A-Beach program to help cover shipping fees for cleanup supplies.
