CORPUS CHRISTI RANKED AS A BEST PERFORMING CITY — Climbing from No. 44 to No. 17, Corpus Christi is now in the top 25 Best Performing Cities nationwide. The list is compiled by the Milken Institute, which compares economics between 379 cities around the country over a 10-year period.
"Job creation is the key measure of long-term economic vitality," says Ross DeVol, chief research officer of the Milken Institute and one of the report's authors. "Our Best-Performing Cities are showing the way."
The institute looks at the demand for an educated, skilled workforce and increased needs in city infrastructure due to increased growth. The growth in Corpus Christi is due mainly to the oil and gas industry, the experts sited.
Corpus Christi is the fifth largest port in cargo tonnage in the nation. The city has been investing in improvements in the port to enable more and bigger ships to dock. A new oil and gas pipeline is also currently under construction.
Seven Texas cities made the list, the most of any other state. Those cities include Houston and San Antonio, both also benefiting from oil and gas production. Austin topped the list, benefiting from a technology boom.
