“We have not seen this kind of an economic metamorphosis in such as short time frame in generations,” said Martinez. Her second state of the city address in her career was held before about 1,000 people at a luncheon in the American Bank Center. The event was hosted by the Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce.
Two major goals accomplished in her first year as mayor include funding for a new Harbor Bridge and the levy of a tax to fund street maintenance. Bridge work is expected to begin in 2015, while street improvement is under way throughout the city.
She urged caution, however, in making decisions about the future in such a charged climate.
“Now is the time for us to be looking down the road on how we strategically plan to protect our existing assets,” she said.
Future goals include improving water supply, air quality, availability of affordable housing and workforce education.
“We still have significant infrastructure needs, so we’re going to address those and we’re also going to be prudent,” the mayor said. “This is the time, when thing’s are going well, that we are conservative and make sure we do right by our taxpayers.”
