San Patricio County commissioners are paving the way for a $1.8 billion steel mill that could be built on 2,500 acres of land near the city of Sinton. Commissioners voted unanimously to create the San Patricio County Buffalo Steel Mill Reinvestment Zone at the request of Buffalo LLC. Representatives of Steel Dynamics, a Fort Wayne, Indiana-based company, attended the meeting, telling commissioners they were looking at the Sinton site for the project.
Three other states are in the running for the plant. The electric-arch-furnace flat roll steel mill would be capable of producing 3 million tons of steel a year. Job creation is estimated at 500-600 jobs. A best-case-scenario timeline has construction beginning in 2020 and the plant going into production in late 2021.
Steel Dynamics announced plans for its plant last November.
“Determination of the final site location is subject to state and local government infrastructure and incentive support,” reads a story in Green Car Congress, a newsfeed website that provides editorial reports on energy options, technologies, products, issues, and policies related to sustainable mobility.
The Steel Dynamics plant will utilize new technology to produce thicker steel slabs with greater width capabilities. The material is used to produce automobiles, heavy machinery, pipes, tubes, appliances, and more. Market focus would be in the southwestern United States and Mexico.
Steel Dynamics was founded in 1993 and is one of the youngest American steel companies. It is also one of the largest domestic steel producers and metals recyclers in the country.
