Work recently started on the approximately $20 million redevelopment project on the Corpus Christi Marina.
In May and June, Corpus Christi City Council approved about $14 million to replace five docks. In addition, over $5 million was allocated for boat basin dredging near the Corpus Christi Marina between McGee Beach and R-Pier as well as breakwater repairs at McGee Beach.
“Redeveloping our marina is a critical priority for me in my service as mayor,” Mayor Paulette M. Guajardo said when spending was approved in June. “Today’s investment in the maintenance and repair of our piers is another significant step towards restoration of our marina, one of our city’s greatest assets.” A goal of the project is to encourage visitors to watch Wednesday night sailboat races and visit the marina's restaurants and vendors. Potentially, more boaters will want to use the marina as well. Slip leasing makes up 80 percent of the marina’s operating revenue.
Work includes replacing existing piers and building a modern dock and utility system that should provide service for 50 years or longer. Construction should be finished by the end of summer 2022.
The old, wooden boat docks being replaced were installed in the 1990s and have weathered more than their typical service life of 25 years. The reconstruction will include sufficient dredging to ensure that limited water depth will not restrict the use of the new slips. Work began on Dock L, the oldest of the five docks, replacing 45 slips for boats 30-55 feet long. With 629 docks, approximately a third of them are being replaced. Docks A-D will feature 162 new slips for boats 25-45 feet long.
Built around two T-heads and one L-head dock shape, the Corpus Christi Marina is home to local shrimp boats, private yachts, public boat tours, and several waterfront restaurants.
