
The Transit Authority is hoping the Real Time Passenger Information System will increase ridership, especially among students.
Next year, the Regional Transit Authority will launch a mobile app for smart phones that will allow passengers to plot the most efficient routes along The B bus line. Expected to launch in March, the "TarnsLoc Rider" app uses a global positioning system (GPS) to keep passengers informed as to where each bus is along its route at all times.
The $186,800 contract was awarded to TransLoc of Durham, NC, one of five companies that submitted proposals. Eighty percent of the bill will be paid for with a grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation. The rest of the money will be provided by the Transportation Authority.
Features will include the ability to plan trips, track buses and set alarms.
