In the Coastal Bend, seafood lovers are treated to an incredible variety of fresh catches. You will also find a wide range of restaurants to serve up the best the gulf has to offer.
“We love good seafood, and we feel so fortunate to live in the Gulf Coast,” said longtime Corpus Christi resident Judy McCoy as she dined with husband, Brad, at a local seafood favorite. “We have a couple of restaurants that are of our favorites, but Corpus has lots of great places to go if you want good seafood.”
The McCoys are not alone in their love of seafood. A study by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) found Americans consumed 4.7 billion pounds of seafood, making the U.S. second only to China in seafood consumption. However, the study also found about 91 percent of seafood consumed in the United States is imported.
Here on the Gulf of Mexico, however, you can almost always find local catches on the menus. Keep in mind there are times when, because of weather or market conditions, restaurants might have to look beyond the gulf for their fresh seafood. Most of the time, however, you can count on fresh Gulf Coast fish any day of the week. “We make every effort to work with local seafood suppliers to offer the freshest catches from the Gulf on our menu,” said WaterStreet marketing manager Liz McCampbell. “We are local, so we like to feature local.” WaterStreet Market includes Water Street Seafood Company, Water Street Oyster Bar, The Executive Surf Club and the newly opened Tailfins.
Here are three tips to enjoying a great seafood meal in the Coastal Bend:
1. Patronize restaurants that buy from local suppliers. Look for those establishments that advertise fresh gulf seafood.
2. Go with the chef’s special. Chefs who buy from local fish markets generally feature that day’s catch as a special.
3. You can’t go wrong with redsnapper. This area of the gulf is known for its great red snapper fishing. It's always a good menu pick, offering flakey, tender white meat.
Whether you dress up or dress down, always bring your appetite when dining at a Coastal Bend seafood restaurant.
