Downtown First Weekend begins Friday, March 6 with the ArtWalk. From 5:30 to 9 p.m. La Retama Park will be filled with vendors, artists, live music and food as downtown opens up to host the monthly event. More than 100 businesses, galleries and museums keep doors open late for the festivities. Museum admissions are free during ArtWalk.

On Sunday, the Downtown Management District sponsors its companion walk over the Harbor Bridge. More than 450 people attended February’s BridgeWalk, said DMD special projects manager Alan Albin.

“We don’t know where they all came from,” Albin said. “We usually have around 200 to 250 people.”

An avid event booster and walker, Albin took Boy Scout Troop 1001 from Richardson, Texas, over the bridge on an off-Sunday in February as a favor.

“They reported back that the two highlights of their trip to Corpus Christi were building sand castles on the beach and walking over the bridge,” Albin said.

Along with the thrill of the view and accomplishment of making the two-mile, sharply inclined round trip, participants are now eligible for a prize. Only those who register online and bring their QR code with them will be eligible to win a “wellness product of the month” from Youga Yoga or a one-hour Segway tour from SegCity.

BridgeWalk begins at 8 a.m. in Heritage Park. ArtWalk, which is held in La Retama Park, is expected to move to a nearby downtown location once renovation work on the park begins in May. Work should take three to four months, said Albin. Downtown Management District plans to bring Saturday’s MusicWalk back for a full FirstWeekend of events once the park renovation is completed.
