Parts of Shoreline Boulevard and Ocean Drive were upgraded in 2016 and 2018. Now, the remaining 14 miles from Interstate 37 to Ennis Joslin are getting a makeover as well. Work begins in October 2020 and should be completed by August 2021. Staff photo
Two-way traffic is back along Shoreline Blvd, which has moved all traffic to the south-bound side of the wide stretch of roadway that runs along the Corpus Christi downtown seawall. The north-bound lanes are now closed and are in the process of being upgraded to park areas with restrooms, shade and benches. The city plans to spend $5.1 million in bond money from a 2008 election on the upgrades.
Maintenance of the new bayfront parkland could be a problem, however, say city officials. No money has been allocated for upkeep once the 34 new acres of open land is restored from construction site to green space.
The realigned roadway curves motorists west of McCaughan Park onto four lanes that no longer run along the seawall. The boulevard is split and landscaped with palm trees and ground cover. Wider sidewalks line both sides.
