The first of eight miradores to be renovated along the Corpus Christi seawall was unveiled Monday, August 31, when the Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon cutting. A small crowd sought shade under complementary green and white golf umbrellas as Mayor Nelda Martinez, State Rep. Todd Hunter and other dignitaries cut the ribbon on the newly refurbished concrete gazebo.
Now 25 years old, the miradores (from the Spanish mirar, to look) offer an expansive view of Corpus Christi Bay from their strategic locations along the seawall. Their design reflects the the look and feel of seaside resorts in Mexico, Morocco and Spain. The most popular one protects a bronze statue of Tejano music star Selena.
The restoration project began in June and should be finished by the end of October for a total cost of about $370,000. It is the first upgrade since the Miradores del Mar were first built in 1991. Each of the eight commemorates a part of the city’s history. The gazebo dedicated to Selena is called La Mirador de la Flor, which was dedicated in 1997.
