Members can have $10 subtracted from a future electric bill by attending the 76th Nueces Electric Cooperative annual meeting Thursday, Oct. 8 at the Richard M. Borchard Fairgrounds in Robstown. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. with registration, dinner, voting and activities. At 7 p.m., the business meeting begins and door prizes are given away.
A publicly owned utility, NEC serves members in eight counties, including Nueces, Kleberg and Jim Wells. It provides retail electricity to more than 40,000 member’s homes and businesses.
Not your typical boring board of directors meeting, the NEC annual meeting provides free barbecue, goody bags and an opportunity to win more than $2,500 in door prizes. Along with the $10 discount on future electric usage, the co-op provides an activity area for kids, including a petting zoo. Education kits for teachers will also be available.
"The co-op looks forward to this meeting every year," said John Sims, NEC's Chief Executive Officer. "The air is filled with energy. Everyone enjoys the activities and it's nice to take a moment to celebrate the co-op's successes and achievements."
Election results for the new board of directors will be announced during the business meeting. Directors serve three-year terms. Any co-op member is qualified to run.
For 2015, the nominees for director are David Rosse (Kingsville/ Ricardo District 3), Maxine Stewart (Freer, District 5), and Johnny Alvarado (Riviera / Loyola, District 9). All members are allowed to vote for all Directors. Member can mail in ballots before the meeting or vote until 7 p.m. the day of the meeting.
