Unfortunate news from the Padre Island National Seashore, especially for beachgoers in need of last-minute supplies. The Island Seashore Gift Shop at the Malaquite Visitor Center is closing its doors forever on Dec. 19.
The concession stand sold picnic and fishing supplies, including beer and cold drinks, as well as tourist items like T-shirts and postcards. It also rented out umbrellas and beach chairs.
The shop closes as operators Donna Gates and Melinda Newcomer chose not to renew their contract this year to pursue new endeavors. They ran the shop for nine years. The open space will be converted into an education center about the dynamic ecosystem at the Padre Island National Seashore.
The Western National Parks Association (WNPA) will offer cold drinks, snacks, ice and sunscreen at the bookstore within the Malaquite Center. However, the selection will be limited, so the National Park Service recommends that visitors plan ahead and bring along their own supplies, like food and camping needs.
