Julian’s Auto and Mobile Mechanic began in a truck on the road, helping motorists who were stranded on the roadside mid-trip or at home before their journey could even begin.
“I didn’t know if it would work,” said owner Robert Phillips of the business plan he put into action in 2000. “I didn’t think there were too many people doing it back then, so I started doing it, and it did really well.”
Phillips’ expertise as an auto mechanic began with a boyhood passion when he was living in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
“At a young age, you know when you’re good at something,” he said, “I was into fixing my bikes. I liked tearing them apart and putting them back together.”
Today, Phillips fixes automobiles, learning first in the Army and then at his father’s automotive shop in Beeville. After he married and moved to Corpus Christi, he decided to go into business for himself. He outfitted a truck and hit the road.
While the mobile mechanic service is still quite popular, most of the work done at Julian’s Auto today happens on site in the shop at 4614 Leopard St., where the expert mechanics at Julian’s Auto are fully trained to solve the problems of today’s computerized and complicated vehicles.
“Electronically, we can fix anything on site,” Phillips said. “I do computer programming and software updates on just about any make and model on the road. Security system, key codes, you name it.”
Many local mechanic shops don’t carry the necessary diagnostic equipment and have to send customers back to the dealer, Phillips said.
“We don’t have to do that,” he continued. “We can do anything a dealer can do.”
Julian’s Auto works on domestic, foreign and diesel engines, including cars, trucks and even RVs. Shop equipment includes the latest in high-tech tools available and holds a Master Automotive Service of Excellence (ASE) certification.
