Talk. Text. Crash. To those of you who can’t keep your hands off your phone, even while driving, you’re in for a change. Port Aransas is cracking down on distracted driving and has passed an ordinance that bans cell phone use while driving.
So no talking, no texting and no app-using on any portable devise unless it is completely hands-free. If you use a phone for music or mapping while driving, you must have a mount — or another hands-free method — and refrain from touching the screen while your vehicle is in motion. Don’t try to be sly about it either: police will be looking out for people who appear to be looking at their laps, where they could be sneaking a text or scrolling through social media apps.
Following the lead of big cities like Dallas, Austin and San Antonio, where hands-free laws have been in effect for a few years now, Port Aransas will aggressively enforce the law to locals and tourists alike. Violation could result in a Class C misdemeanor with a fine of up to $500.
According to Texas Department of Transportation, one in five crashes in Texas are a result of distracted driving. In 2014, there were 100,825 traffic crashes in Texas that involved distracted driving, resulting in 3,214 serious injuries and 468 deaths. TxDOT begs that travelers “drive now, talk or text later.” Put away the phone and focus on the road.
