For the next month, sections of covered parking will be closed at the Corpus Christi International Airport. Work on renovating parking at the airport began in late March and is expected to continue for six to eight weeks.
Work includes replacing pole covers, removing rust, power washing and painting. Because construction can only take place when sections are empty of cars, the work will be done in phases, said Fred Segundo, director of aviation at CCIA.
“We want to get this done as quickly and as safely as possible,” Segundo said. “That means that closing sections off is necessary so that we can do the work and not damage any vehicles in the process.”
Parking will still be available in sections not closed. Signs and barricades will direct travelers into safe parking areas.
Work may include new canopies for the entire covered lot if the Corpus Christi City Council approves the purchase of materials. The entire covered lot will be closed if the new canopies are installed, but customers will still be able to use either the long-term lot for $7 a day or the short-term lot for $10 a day.
Covered parking at CCIA, which is popular with travelers, is 12 years old. It will take eight weeks, Segundo said, to replace all the covers.
