What started eight years ago as one man and a lawn mower has now expanded to include five crew members and business profits in the six digits.
“Our company revenue has been increasing each year by over $10,000,” said Danny Govea, owner of King’s All In One Lawn Service in Corpus Christi. The secret to success, he added, is consistency and quality work.
Now in the busiest time of the year, Govea can be found in the yards of Corpus Christi’s homes and businesses planting flowers, trimming grass and hauling trash. His all-in-one service includes lawn maintenance, trees, cleanups, installations, hauling, removals, fertilization and landscape design for both commercial and residential sites.
Govea’s experience in landscaping started at age 14. While attending high school, he mowed lawns and trimmed trees part time. As an adult, he worked at a car dealership until it eventually closed. Not certain of where to go after that, Govea decided to fall back on something he knew how to do quite well. He invested in a lawn mower, a hedge trimmer and a weed eater, then went door to door offering his services. He also advertised in the phone book.
“The first year was hard when I started out going door to door,” he said. “I really had to put in the work. Some people are lazier than others; some people don’t like going out, doing the bid, doing the dirty work. Our company doesn’t take any days off. Anybody that calls me, whether through referrals or through the phone book, we’ll go out there and do the bid.”
The most enjoyable factor of his business is designing landscapes, especially for new properties. A beautiful landscape has a positive impact on a home or business, he said.
“We often get hired by and get referrals from realtors who want to improve the surroundings of the houses they’re trying to sell,” Govea said.
King’s All In One Lawn Service also designs and maintains landscapes for commercial properties such as hotels.
“We get a lot of compliments on our landscaping, and one of the more famous places we’ve done recently is Emerald Beach Hotel,” Govea said.
Another aspect of the business is trash hauling and removal. King’s is often hired by banks to service foreclosed homes, which tend to have a lot of trash and junk left behind. Called a ‘trash-out’ cleanup, Govea said his crew sometimes finds a few treasures as well.
No matter the job, King’s All In One Service focuses on dependability.
“As a business owner, I’m also very picky and particular about doing things right,” he said. “I often accompany my crew, whether working alongside them doing hands-on jobs or dropping them off to work sites and inspecting how the work is getting done.”
Govea named the company after his son, Danny King Govea.
“My business was born around the same time as the birth of my son, whose middle name is King,” he said. “I wanted him to have a legacy, so when he’s older, he can decide to take over after me.”
