The filing period for candidates to run for Mayor or any of the eight seats on the Corpus Christi city council begins Monday, July 25. Anyone wishing to run for the council will have until 5 p.m. August 22 to qualify for a position on the November 8 General Election ballot. 
So far, Mayor Nelda Martinez and at-large candidate Chad Magill have both declared they would be running for re-election. Council member Colleen McIntyre has announced she will not seek reelection. She has served District 4 since her election in 2012. 
Meanwhile, for those not interested in running an expensive campaign, a vast number of city boards, committees and commissions seek qualified volunteers to serve. The City Secretary’s Office is currently seeking biographical information forms for the following boards.
• Planning Commission – Three vacancies with terms to July 3, 2018. The Planning Commission makes and amends a master plan for the physical development of the City in addition to other duties that directly impact the growth patterns in the city. 
• Board of Adjustment – Seven vacancies with terms to April 4, 2018. 
• Commission on Children and Youth – Four vacancies with terms to May 1, 2017 and May 1, 2019 representing Health and Human Services, Education,  At-Large and Youth Representative. 
• Community Youth Development Program Steering Committee – Nine vacancies with terms to August 13, 2016 and August 31, 2017, representing residents of the 78415 zip code and four at-large.
• Corpus Christi Business and Job Development Corporation – Three vacancies with terms to July 31, 2018. 
• Corpus Christi Community Improvement Corporation/Loan Review Committee – Eleven vacancies with terms to May 7, 2017, May 7, 2018 and May 7, 2019, representing the following categories:  four, community at-large; two, financial Institution; one, real estate agency; one, engineer; one architect/homebuilder; one, health/human services; and one, legal profession. 
• Electrical Advisory Board – Two vacancies with terms to December 31, 2016, and December 31, 2017, representing the following categories:  one, not connected to the electrical industry and one, commercial Builder with five years’ experience. 
• Food Service Advisory Committee – Two vacancies with terms to June 24, 2019, representing the following categories: one, community at-large and one, food advisory. 
• Mayor’s Fitness Council – Five vacancies with terms to May 11, 2018, representing the following categories: one, at-large; one, community outreach; one, health/medical profession; one, youth initiatives and one, senior initiatives. 
Other vacancies include the Mechanical/Plumbing Advisory Board, Parking Advisory Committee, Retired and Senior Volunteer Program Advisory Committee, Senior Companion Program Advisory Committee, Tree Advisory Committee and the Water Resources Advisory Committee.
