No need to settle for a plain white wall as your selfie backdrop. Corpus Christi serves well for natural lighting and unique settings.
Tips for the best selfie:
– Clean, natural lighting is key. Turn off the flash on your phone
– Get in the shade. Direct sunlight casts stark shadows
– Play with your angles. Take a whole bunch and choose your favorites
– Pick up a mini tripod or selfie stick to make things easier on yourself
Turn the search for a better selfie into a scavenger hunt. Pick an area or subject that can only be Corpus Christi and get started!
1. Selena Selfie
Strong independent women, unite. Selena is the Queen of Tejano and an inspiration for ladies everywhere. Take a shot at her memorial statue, the Mirador de la Flor, with Corpus Christi Bay framing the background. Get to the seawall first thing in the morning or around sunset for the best lighting. In between, check out the Selena Museum and recording studio and Selena’s burial site to complete your education in Tejano music’s biggest female star.
The Mirador de la Flor is located at 600 N Shoreline Blvd in Corpus Christi.
2. Aquatic Selfie
The Texas State Aquarium is full of photo ops. My favorite is in the Dolphin Bay underwater viewing room, where a panoramic window shows off the aquarium’s four playful dolphins. Don’t stop just there, though — snap a picture with the sharks, otters, stingrays and jellies as well.
The Texas State Aquarium is located at 2710 N Shoreline Blvd in Corpus Christi. Visit texasstateaquarium.org for hours, admission and more.
3. Nautical Selfie
Put on your boat shoes — we’re going sailing. Watch the Wednesday Night Regatta from the bleachers at the Corpus Christi Marina. The regatta begins at 6 p.m. every Wednesday. Be sure to capture the sailboats in the background.
The Corpus Christi Marina is located at 500A N Shoreline Blvd.
4. Colorful Selfie
The Marina Arts District is a vibrant area. If you’re looking for bright blues, hot pinks and lime greens, this is the place. The district is also blooming with public art, so murals are easy to find. The most recent initiative was turning the boring electrical boxes from drab to cheerful. Wander around and find something that will make your feed pop.
5. Nature Selfie
Flowers bring out the best in people (seriously — horticultural therapy is a thing). Visit the botanical gardens and and show yourself some love in the rose garden, snap a photo in the Butterfly House or along the Brenneke Nature Trail.
The South Texas Botanical Gardens & Nature Center is located at 8545 S Staples Street. Visit stxbot.org for hours, admission and more.
