City employees are back to working from home as of Tuesday, June 23, after 50 workers tested positive for COVID-19, announced City Manager Peter Zanoni. The work-from-home order will last for the next two weeks.
The number of positive cases in the city has spiked in recent days, with 109 cases reported Monday, June 22, alone. After Gov. Greg Abbott opened the door on June 22 for local governments to make their own decisions about mandating mask wearing, Nueces County Judge Barbara Canales did just that later that same day.
The order mandating masks goes into effect at midnight Friday, June 25, and will last until July 10.
Counted among the city workers with COVID-19 are a management team member in the gas department and a senior police officer in the training division. Cases also were reported among public health director's office and parks employees.
“It is vital we maintain city operations,” Zanoni said when making the announcement. “The two-week work-from-home protocol is one step we can take to reduce and slow the spread of COVID-19. Our number one goal at this time is the safety of our employees and their families.”
