It's two for one Art Fiesta weekend in Port Aransas May 18-19 with Artfest and the Songwriter's Showcase. Both of these annual events are held at Robert's Point Park.

Sponsored by the Port Aransas Art Center and the Chamber of Commerce, festivities include music, shopping, eating and fun. More than 40 artists will have their creations on display from original paintings to hand painted fish and signs to stained glass and more.

Artfest is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free.

This is the 8th year for the ArtFest and the 30th for the Songwriter's Showcase, which will begin at 7 p.m. Sunday, May 19.

Performing this year are Preecher Williams, Jesse Bishop, Woodie Ray Lawson with The Dynamics and drummer Debbie Dault, James Derkits, Carol Elliott, Hamp Brockman and Janet Drew, Guy LeRoux, Tyler McCumber and Tony Saracene, L. Leon Sands, Sierra How, Melissa Broke, Todd Doran and Lela Caldwell with Purple Monkey Lasers.

Birthday beginnings

The showcase began when musician Jesse Bishop decided to hold a musical birthday celebration. He also decided to charge a fee and give the money to the nonprofit Port Aransas Art Cente. When Bishop and his wife moved to Costa Rica, his drummer Preecher Williams became the new emcee. This year, however, the Bishops will be back to participate in the 30th celebration, which will cost $7 at the gate.

Bring blankets, lawn chairs and coolers for a beachgoing birthday bash.
