A new home for the Coast Guard is one step nearer completion. Site preparation for the $18 million office space and hanger at the Corpus Christi Airport is almost complete. The 170,000-square-foot facility moves the Coast Guard’s home from the Naval Air Station Corpus Christi to the airport.

It’s a first of its kind facility says a Coast Guard spokesperson. It will house the newest and most technologically advanced aircraft in the Coast Guard’s fleet, including three new hi-tech helicopters and three maritime patrol aircraft.

The new command and data center, berthing areas, food service and fitness center will be ready for action sometime in early 2015.

The Coast Guard decided to move its current facility to improve transit times between duty berthing of the personnel who support the aircraft, and the hangar and runway. Also, the 60-year-old facility at NAS is too close to the seawall and the corrosive effects of sea spray. The newer model aircraft feature technology that is highly susceptible to corrosion.
