Boating lovers from around the world have the Corpus Christi Marina locked into their GPS. Considered one of the breeziest cities in the United States, Corpus Christi is the place to go for lovers of wind, waves and boats. And thanks to investments in time, energy and money by the City of Corpus Christi, the area is now home to the largest — and most popular — municipal marina along the Texas coast.
The Corpus Christi Marina is a special place for boaters because of the pristine waters of the bay and the huge dolphin and bird populations.
"That’s why we’re called the sparkling city by the sea,” says Peter Davidson, marina director of the Corpus Christi Marina.
Davidson has worked as marina director since 1998. He grew up sailing with his father in South Africa and shows his dedication to both the sport of sailing and life on the sea by the care he takes of the city's marina.
The facility was recently named the cleanest Texas marina by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. That comes from hard work and a focus on perfection. Davidson has been particularly successful with his grant applications for improvements.
Most modern boating marina
With more than $3.5 million in recent grants, the marina has been transformed into a modern facility with boating access, new boat ramps and ample parking. Other upgrades include updated bathroom facilities, a laundry, a shower, a meeting room, a library, a computer room, a lounge and a new fuel station. These renovations also include the extension of boat slips from 50 feet to 150 feet, so any vessel from around the world can dock.
The marina hosts about 600 boats on a regular basis. There are two separate yacht clubs: the Corpus Christi Yacht Club, established in the mid-1920s, and the Bay Yacht Club from the mid-1970s. Both clubs offer educational programs for kids as well as sailing classes for boat lovers of all ages.
With ongoing boating activities and a beautiful setting, who wouldn't want to drop anchor here?
