The aging Corpus Christi Greyhound bus station is on the move. By March 2016, it is expected to become part of the Regional Transportation Authority complex currently under construction eight blocks away at Leopard and South Staples Street.
Greyhound has owned the downtown property at 702 N. Chaparral Street since 1948. The company plans to sell the Chaparral St. location now that is has signed a 10-year contract with RTA.
The new RTA complex will act as a hub for all buses in the city. Its new home could help the station shed its image as a hangout for homeless once it is in a bright and shiny new facility.
Closing down the shabby station on N. Chaparral should, in turn, help change the reputation and image of that area, home to the Ritz Theater just across the street from the station. Revival efforts by the Downtown Management District and the Corpus Christi Positive Action Towards Cultural Heritage expect to get a boost from the move.
