After a year in business, Coastal Wellness is helping lead the way to a healthier Corpus Christi. The husband-and-wife team of Ken and Brooke Knight said they started their business with that mission in mind.
“We want to help people achieve their health and wellness goals,” Ken Knight told Corpus Christi Business News. “Our holistic approach considers the whole person. It is not enough or even effective to only treat a person’s physical ailments for true wellness. To get healthy and stay healthy, a person needs to have a healthy mind, body and spirit.”
A licensed massage therapist, Brooke Knight also is a medical massage practitioner specializing in rehabilitative massage including myofacial release, reflexology and deep-tissue and trigger-point therapies. These massage therapies are designed to help relieve pain, improve sleep quality, decrease anxiety levels and increase flexibility.
Ken Knight is a certified holistic health and nutrition coach with extensive knowledge and experience in aroma therapy. He educates people about their individual nutritional needs.
“There is no across-the-board diet that is right for everyone,” he said. “Eggs may be good for one person and wrong for another person’s system. Our holistic approach looks at the whole person and their unique path to health and wellness.”
One of the services that has grown in demand since they first opened their doors is aroma therapy, which uses essential oils for many purposes.
“Aroma therapy has been huge — so beneficial for our clients,” Knight said. “We are including it with almost all of our other services. People have found this to be helpful for issues with sleep, allergies, anxiety, sugar levels and stress. We’ve even had moms who have used aroma therapy for a colicky baby.”
Corpus Christi has come a long way since being deemed the fattest city in America in 2010 by Men’s Fitness magazine. In fact, in the past couple of years, Corpus Christi didn’t even make the list.
“We know that there is real interest by people in our area to live healthier,” Knight said. “Our clients are seeking information that they can apply to their daily lives. We are excited to be one of the first [businesses] in the area to offer a holistic, alternative approach.”
The effectiveness of massage therapy and other alternative methods of health and wellness is also being recognized by traditional healthcare providers, Knight said. He explained that some health insurance providers now cover their services, as do some flex-spending account providers.
“Our services are therapeutic and rehabilitative,” Knight said. “We want these services available to everyone, so we work hard to keep our prices at a level that is accessible to the general public.”
Helping people stay healthy has been a lifelong passion for the Knights, who met at a massage therapy class while Ken was serving in the U.S. Navy.  They have been married 13 years and are raising their four children in the Coastal Bend.
“Our bottom line is that we truly care about people,” Knight said. “Every person who walks through that door deserves our full attention. We focus energy and resources on each person’s individual needs. Helping people learn to take charge of their own health and improving their daily lives is our greatest achievement.”
