Charles Zahn, chair, Port of Corpus Christi Authority

Charles Zahn, chair, Port of Corpus Christi Authority

A new year brings some new faces and officers to the Port of Corpus Christi Authority board of commissioners. At its most recent meeting, the seven-person board, which was down to six at the time, swore in Wes Hoskins as its newest member. Hoskins is the only member representing San Patricio County. He replaces commissioner Judy Hawley, who retired at the end of her term in 2015.
The board voted to make commissioner Charles Zahn chairman. Barbara Canales was appointed secretary and Wayne Squires was named vice chair. Also, Richard Valls Jr. was sworn in to a full term. He was appointed in 2014 to finish a position left vacant by the resignation of Robert Kostelnik.
Port commissioners serve staggered three-year terms without pay. Three are appointed by the Corpus Christi City Council, three by the Nueces County Commissioners Court and one by the San Patricio County Commissioners Court.

Who’s Who

Appointed by the Nueces County commissioners, Zahn is at the beginning of his second three-year term, which expires in 2018. He is a partner in the Law Offices of Charles W. Zahn Jr. and a long-time resident of Port Aransas. In his position as chair of the Texas Coastal Windstorm Task Force, he was instrumental in pushing through new windstorm insurance legislation during the last legislative session. He is the only Port Aransas resident to ever serve on the port commission.
Also a Nueces County appointee, Canales is in the middle of her term, which ends 2017. She is a practicing attorney and partner of Mother Ocean, LLC. An active member of the Coastal Bend community, Canales has won numerous awards and served on a long list of boards and foundations. She recently was guest speaker at the San Antonio Pipeliners Association's regular meeting.
Hoskins’ three-year term will expire in 2019. His professional experience includes Chairman of the Board for Coastal Bend Bancshares; President & CEO of First Community Bank; Director of First Community Bank; and auctioneer with Buddy and Wesley Hoskins Auctioneers. He has served as Texas Bankers Association Chairman; Corpus Christi Downtown Management District Board of Directors; and Gregory Portland Independent School District Trustee and Secretary/Treasurer.
