Local authorities are looking to settle more than 15,000 active warrants in Corpus Christi Municipal Court before a state-wide warrant roundup begins March 5. The warrant roundup, which ends March 12, will lead to arrests, but scofflaws who come in willingly during the previous two weeks of amnesty, will be given an opportunity to restore their case without handcuffs or jail time. Only one week of that two-week amnesty period remains.
Believed to be the largest joint operation of its kind the Great Texas Warrant Roundup includes a total of 300 jurisdictions, including counties, justices of the peace, constables and municipalities of all sizes. Hundreds of thousands of notices were mailed statewide to warn of upcoming arrests and the two-week amnesty period set for Feb. 22-March 4.
The roundup targets thousands of defendants with traffic, parking, city ordinance, penal code and higher charge warrants from the participating jurisdictions. The goal is to bring individuals into compliance with court orders.
Corpus Christi Municipal Court has scheduled a walk-in docket all this week — Feb. 29-March 4 — for individuals who are not able to pay immediately. Payment plans or community service can be negotiated for those who qualify. Anyone appearing before the court during this week will not be arrested, officials promise.
