The 2016 National Windsurfing Championships blew into Corpus Christi this week, with competitors tacking off Oleander Point in Cole Park along Ocean Drive since Wednesday, May 11. More than 100 racers from around the world are involved in the competition, which ends Saturday, May 13.
The real windy city didn’t deliver Thursday, however, as windsurfers struggled for enough sea-breeze to transition. Competitors are hoping for better winds by Saturday. All events are free for spectators.
Events on Friday, May 13 include Formula and Kona/Raceboard/Techno 203/RSX from 12 to 2 p.m. with a break from 2 to 3 p.m. Slalom and Freestyle or Long Distance are set for 3 to 7 p.m.
The final day of competition, Saturday, May 14, begins with a Skipper’s meeting at 11 a.m. Other events include:
• 12-2 p.m., Formula and Kona/Raceboard/Techno 203/RSX;
• 2-3 p.m., break;
• 3-7 p.m., Slalom Freestyle & Freeride (free registration is required);
• 8:30 p.m., Awards ceremony at the Executive Surf Club, 306 N. Chaparral Street.
Hosting such a high profile event is becoming the norm for Corpus Christi. In July 2018, the International Sailing Federation Youth World Championships hit local beaches and bays for eight days of Olympic qualifying. Some 400 sailors from 80 countries are expected. Much like the Olympics, the city will host a parade of nations along with opening and closing ceremonies.
