The sea turtles are nesting and their eggs need your help. Now at the peak of the nesting season, Kemp’s ridley sea turtles especially are being spotting all along the beach at Padre Island National Seashore. [image id="19428" align="alignright" width="40%" ]
On Thursday, May 26, 17 turtles were found laying their eggs at PINS. In the state of Texas that same day, 29 total were found, including one on Mustang Island. So far this year, 157 Kemp’s ridley nests have been confirmed in the state.
Turtle mothers lay their eggs and leave them. The eggs are on their own, vulnerable to predators and accidental breakage from beach goers. If you see a turtle nesting, do not disturb it! Report it immediately to turtle patrol by calling 361-949-8173 X226 if you are on North Padre Island or 8886-TURTLES if you are elsewhere in Texas. [image id="19426" align="alignright" width="40%" ]
Someone will come and carefully remove the eggs to an incubator at the national seashore where they will be watched, hatched and released.
Public releases of hatchlings are expected to begin sometime from June 11-15 and continue throughout June and July, and maybe even into August. To find out when a public release is planned, call 361-949-7163 or follow the Padre Island National Seashore’s Facebook page for updates.
