Another honor for Corpus Christi celebrity Selena Quintanilla Perez. Madam Tussauds Wax Museum in Hollywood plans to unveil a wax likeness of the Tenajo music superstar on August 30 in California. The honor is in response to the more than 10,000 people who signed a digital petition on change.org.
“At Madame Tussauds, our figures represent icons who have made a significant impact on our culture,” said Colin Thomas, general manager of Madame Tussauds Hollywood. “That perfectly describes Selena."
Valued at around $350,000, the figure will be dressed in a costume worn February 7, 1993, in a concert at Memorial Coliseum in Corpus Christi. The August unveiling will be in commemoration of Selena’s fifth and final album, “Dreaming of You,” which was released posthumously 21 years ago.
A first for a Latin artist, the album made it to the top of the Billboard charts.
The Quintanilla family worked closely with the museum throughout the process of choosing her pose, her hairstyle, makeup and outfit.
“This is yet another step in making sure that her legacy lives on and that her fans new and old can appreciate her as a person, an artist and one whom we can all identify with,” said Suzette Arriaga, Selena's sister.
OTHER HONORS
A star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame will be soon be dedicated to Selena along with another famous Corpus Christi native, Eva Longoria. No dates for either ceremonies have been set.
“We are proud to join her fans in celebrating her legacy by immortalizing her,” Thomas said. "Her influence has transcended generations and her passionate fans continue to be inspired by her to this day."
According to the change.org page, Selena sold 60 million records and was the first Tejano artist to win a Grammy Award. She was the first female artist to chart five albums on the Billboard 200 at the same time.
Corpus Christi now holds an annual festival in her honor. The third annual Fiesta de la Flor is set for March 24-25. M•A•C Cosmetics is also releasing a line of makeup in her honor.
