The latest craze to hit the world of smartphones — Pokémon Go — is a no go at Naval Air Station Kingsville. For one thing, no cameras may be used on base and the game requires using a smartphone’s camera function. If found using your cell phone camera at NAS-Kingsville, you could face administrative or disciplinary actions, announced the naval air station via Facebook July 19.
“The game also presents a safety hazard, as players may pay more attention to their screen than to their surroundings,” said the Facebook post. “And remember, any cell phone usage while driving is prohibited.”
Of course, that’s true anywhere now.
The Naval Air Station also warned drivers to watch for pedestrians playing the Pokémon game, as they will be concentrating on smartphone screens and not paying attention to reality.
“This is especially important on local roads, parking lots and near buildings,” read the posting. “Do not play the game while driving your vehicle. Accidents have already been reported of drivers distracted by the game.”
Finally, the Facebook post warned of Pokémon Go “lures.” People have been lured to locations to hunt Pokémon, but were robbed instead.
“Avoid abandoned or unlit areas,” warns the Naval Air Station. “If you choose to play Pokémon Go, please play smart and play it safe.”
Also, just as a reminder, don’t play it at NAS-Kingsville.
One safe place to play: Billish Park on Padre Island Thursday, July 21 at 7 p.m., right next to the Island Farmers Market! Whataburger Field also plans several Pokémon Go events, so don't forget your smartphone when you go to the gam.
