As the only place in the United States to view endangered whooping cranes in their native habitat, it is fitting the annual international Whooping Crane Festival is held in the Coastal Bend. Port Aransas hosts the popular festival, which this year is set for Feb. 23-28. Whether a novice or an expert birder, the nature tours, workshops, lectures and other activities can be enjoyed by everyone.
“This is the 21st year,” said Jeffrey Hentz, the new director of the Port Aransas Chamber of Commerce. “It’s become something that’s a staple for our community and the state of Texas. It’s a premium, popular event that attracts bird-watchers from all over the world.”
The whooping crane is the most endangered of the 16 species of cranes in the wild. They are also the last group of naturally migrating cranes, which is why the festival stresses the importance of sustainability and conservation, from estuaries to the air. About 300 cranes make their way from their breeding grounds in Wood Buffalo National Park in Canada to their winter grounds at the Aransas Wildlife Refuge each fall, said Sheri Johnson, communications manager for the chamber.
The more-than-700 festival visitors come to take part in birding tours on both land and sea led by professional birders. Public speakers educate visitors on everything from nature photography to conservation to political issues. Workshops are held daily on how to identify birds and use binoculars.
“It’s a great place for a beginner birder,” Johnson said. “Our tour guides are fantastic with people from novice to expert; they really take their time.”
Visitors will also have a chance to unleash their inner artist with the Wine, Whine and Design Whoopers event, where you can create your own painting while enjoying a glass of pinot.
The Bird’s Nest Nature-Related Trade Show, with booths presenting everything from bird feeders to fine art, is also part of the weeklong affair.
Welcome and on-site registration for the Whooping Crane Festival is Thursday, Feb. 23, at the Port Aransas Civic Center, 710 W. Ave A, starting at 1:30 p.m. For more information, visit whoopingcranefestival.org.
