Candidates wanting to run in a special election for Corus Christi’s next mayor now have some target dates. Filing begins Feb. 28 and runs through March 27 for the May 6 special election. City council is expected to finalize those dates at its Feb. 28 meeting.
The election is expected to cost between $230,000 and $240,000, city secretary Rebecca Huerta said in a council meeting Feb. 14. The $10,000 cost difference depends on how early voting will be handled, a decision the council will soon have to make.
A run-off election will cost the same and is a likely scenario as there are six candidates who have declared their intentions to run. A field of seven hopefuls was culled to six when former at-large council member Chad Magill withdrew his name. He pulled his name from the race because he said he would lessen chances of a run-off.
The six candidates remaining are:
• at-large Councilman Joe McComb
• former mayoral candidate Ray Madrigal
• former At-Large Councilman Mark Scott
• Ethics Commission member Larry White
• former Mayor Nelda Martinez
• Tom Browne Middle School Assistant Principal Jonathan Garrison
Within this timeframe, early voting should begin April 24 and continue through May 2.
