At less than a year old, Bike Corpus Christi is already regarded as the best in the country. The bicycle-rental program, which started in October 2016, is a favorite of tourists and locals alike, encouraging people to get active and explore downtown Corpus Christi on wheels.
Borrowing a bike is easy: simply download the Zagster app on a smart phone and follow the instructions to unlock the bike. Take a spin for a mere $3 an hour — the first hour free.
The bikes are a partnership between the Downtown Management District and national bike share company, Zagster, which provides the equipment, bike racks, web site and mobile app.
Zagster supplied 40 new bikes across seven locations downtown and is looking to bring in more. Zagster’s sales consultant Mike Sheppard was recently in town to meet with potential investors interested in helping the program grow. Zagster will match any funds to expand, Sheppard said.
Corpus Christi hosts a relatively small program, but Zagster has named the city as the No. 1 bike share program in the country, out of 50 other cities, including Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Fort Collins, Colorado.
According to the Marina Arts District, more than 4,000 people have signed up as members and taken the bikes for a ride. Riders have logged 12,620 trips and have ridden 31,412 miles. That’s the equivalent of 1.3 times around the world!
Wanna go for a ride? Sightsee the Marina Arts District by following our custom route that takes you on an adventure along the seawall and around the district’s museums, sculptures, murals and more. Check out the route here for a fun afternoon, or create your own.
