News of the new dominates the front page of the August issue of the Corpus Christi Business News, which hits newsstands and business owners’ mailboxes this week. The Coastal Bend welcomes a new president of the chamber of commerce, a new maestro for the symphony and new commander at the local naval air station. Also, a new oil and gas terminal will soon be built at the port, and wheelchair-bound fans of the beach have a new way to gain access to the sand and sea.
Turn to page 2 to find out about the newest issue of the Legal Guide, which will be distributed in October. Deadline to advertise is Sept. 2.
Featured business owners this month include:
• Stump Enterprises, a grease trap and septic-tank company that makes emergency calls;
• Corpus Christi Safe and Lock, which not only opens commercial, residential and car doors, but can also crack a safe;
• ABC Painting and Drywall, which is collecting nominations for its second year of Paint It Forward;
• CJ’s Cleaning Service, an expanding family business built around the dreams of a lost daughter; and
• Hinojosa Driving School, turning teenagers into safe and responsible drivers.
The Events section lists a sample of classes for small-business owners available this month at both Del Mar College and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. More events can be found at 101corpuschristi.com/EVENTS, an interactive calendar that allows users to send details to friends and family through emails. You can also load events to digital calendars with just a click.
Also in event news, we have a list of summer art shows, many closing in mid-August or September. One of those shows, a pop-up in the Water Street Market, is detailed on page 17.
In other news, find out what Corpus Christi Mayor Joe McComb told Texas Gov. Gregg Abbott during a recent meeting concerning the legislature’s special session. You’ll also find stories about:
• tax-free weekend for back-to-school shopping;
• why the artist behind Mount Rushmore now has a new historical marker on the downtown seawall;
• why stage one drought restrictions have kicked in;
• why the FFA convention will not be coming back to Corpus Christi;
• what the Texas State Aquarium is doing to protect marine animals from plastics;
• how Driscoll Children’s Hospital received the highest care ranking recently;
• the newest changes in the state’s knife carrying law; and
• how you can offer feedback on a proposal to double the fees at Padre Island National Seashore.
Drivers need to know that the Corpus Christi Police Department will soon be policing traffic violations in unmarked cars.
And if you’re looking for some place special to volunteer, check out Special Hearts in the Arts, a new nonprofit taking off in the Coastal Bend.
