For $2, and for a limited time, shoppers can purchase a reusable Selena, Queen of Cumbia, shopping bag at select H-E-Bs across Texas. Some of the proceeds will benefit the Boys & Girls Club of the Coastal Bend. A portion will go to the Selena Foundation, a partner with H-E-B in the bag sales.
Announcement of this newest marketing tribute to the late Latina superstar came March 1. Bags will go on sell at 9 a.m. Friday, March 2, and can be purchased online at heb.com beginning at noon the same day. (Limit two bags per person.)
A video announcing the sale of the pink and black bags features Suzette Quintanilla-Arriaga, Selena’s sister, and Regina Garcia, spokesperson for H-E-B. In the video, Garcia presents a $25,000 check to the Selena Foundation as a portion of expected bag sale proceeds.
“Today is an amazing and exciting day for us at H-E-B,” Garcia said in the video. “Selena’s legacy lives on through her foundation, and we are able to give back to many communities throughout the area.”
H-E-B has sponsored Fiesta de la Flor each of the now four years the Selena tribute festival has been held in Corpus Christi. This year’s festival is April 13-14 along the bayfront in downtown Corpus Christi.
“We’re really excited to be able to give back to our community on behalf of the foundation,” Quintanilla-Arriaga said. “It’s a great keepsake, and that’s important also for all Selena fans.”
New bag owners are being encouraged to post photos of themselves with their bags using the hashtag #selenayheb.
The bags, which are made entirely of recycled material, can be used for multiple purposes, said Quintanilla-Arriaga, including as beach bags, gifts and, of course, shopping bags.
