The one and only rug spa in South Texas can be found right here in Corpus Christi. That’s right: rug spa. That’s what David Antonetz, owner of Advanced Carpet Cleaning and Restoration, calls his unique and incredibly effective carpet- and rug-cleaning systems.
“The rug washing is a beautiful process,” Antonetz said. “It does a wonderful job of getting a maximum amount of soil out of these rugs. I like to say that the rugs get the full spa treatment. Each rug gets treated like the special item it is.”
Soiled rugs are fully immersed in water and cleaned with special products. The resulting wet, heavy rugs are then put into a centrifuge, where G-force power spins out the moisture and dries the rugs without any heat.
In talking about his business, which Antonetz obviously loves, he is careful about word choices, always distinguishing between oriental and area rugs. High-quality oriental rugs can cost $5,000-$20,000, but the difference is more than the price tag, he said. It is all about the quality and the story.
“There is always a really cool story behind them,” Antonetz said of oriental rugs. “It is very exciting to get a rug, identify its country of origin, and take it from its soiled, usually heavily pet-urine-saturated condition, and take them to almost new.”
Who made the rug, where, how, and with what tells the tale of each creative floor covering. Oriental rugs — which are any handmade rugs from a foreign country — are usually made of high-quality wool and hand tied knot by knot over time to create beautiful, art-worthy designs. Rugs can take months or even years to complete, Antonetz explained.
“They are really handwoven works of art,” he said. “My favorite rugs are Persian rugs, especially the classic ‘Medallion’ motif.”
Rugs are not all that Advanced Carpet Cleaning and Restoration does. Antonetz incorporated rug cleaning into his 20-year-old, wall-to-wall carpet-cleaning business 10 years ago as people began renovating and building homes with hardwood and tile floors.
“The floor-covering market made a decided turn away from wall-to-wall carpeting, Antonetz said. “We lost market share significantly. People are putting other things on their floors.”
All of which Advanced Carpet Cleaning and Restoration can help clean and maintain. In fact, cleaning and polishing terrazzo floors is another speciality and a growing part of the business for Antonetz.
“Terrazzo is very common in older parts of Corpus Christi,” he said. “It’s in almost all the older homes. What people have done over the years is cover it up with carpet. Now, they are pulling that carpet up and restoring the terrazzo.”
Advanced Carpet Cleaning and Restoration can clean any dirty carpet using its truck-based steam equipment or, if the owner decides to tear it out and finds terrazzo, clean and polish the old floor until it looks like new. The company also cleans and refurbishes natural stone, tile, and grout.
All those carpets being torn up and those new homes being built without wall-to-wall carpeting turned into a unique opportunity for the company. Staff can now clean the rugs people are putting over their wood, tile, and vinyl flooring.
“People still want the soft feel of an oriental or area rug under their feet,” Antonetz said. “They want the sound absorbency and the comfort.”
Antonetz’s son, Mike, has been by his side learning the business all his life. He worked for the family company part time in high school then came on full time after graduation.
“He’s as good as I am, and he will eventually inherit the business,” Antonetz said.
