Tune in to “Shark Tank” at 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, to watch Corpus Christi native Meredith Jurica pitch her popular Makeup Junkie Bags on ABC’s Emmy Award-winning reality show. Now in its 10th season, “Shark Tank” winnowed down 40,000 applicants to 100, including Jurica and her creation.
“As a self-proclaimed makeup junkie, I’ve probably bought and tried every cosmetic on the market,” Jurica told a TV reporter to explain how she got started. She needed a bag that would hold her cosmetics on the go and would be easy to carry.
Jurica started her now $1 million business in her kitchen in Conroe, experimenting with different sizes and models before landing on one she really liked using. Her friends fell in love with it, too, and soon she was making at least one a week for someone she knew. She decided to try a little social media marketing.
Her first month on Facebook resulted in 700 orders for the flat, water-proof, Made-in-Texas bag, which can hold 20 or more cosmetic products. Within the first year, she had sold 50,000.
Now in her second year on Facebook, Jurica is selling out online and in the 2,000 boutiques handling her product nationwide. From a few seamstresses in her kitchen, she now employs more than 70 people. Recently, USA Today named the Makeup Junkie Bag as one of the top 10 travel bags.
When she appears on the show Jan. 20, Jurica will pitch her investment opportunity to Sharks Daymond John, Barbara Corcoran, Mark Cuban, Kevin O’Leary, Lori Greiner, and Robert Herjavec.
