Spring Breakers have already hit the Coastal Bend. Through March 20, thousands of people will visit the area to enjoy the beaches, food, and attractions. Spring Break for Corpus Christi Independent School District students is March 14-18.
The city of Corpus Christi is preparing for an increase in visitors with lifeguards on mobile patrol, designated emergency vehicle lanes on Gulf Beach, and increased traffic monitoring.
The Corpus Christi Police Department will set up an island command post and have patrol units on beaches to stop underage drinking and driving while intoxicated.
Visitors and residents should observe and follow the flag warning system to be aware of surf and rip current conditions. Flags are located on all Gulf beach access roads.
A red flag indicates surf conditions are strong and heavy rip currents are present, a sign that beachgoers should not enter the water. If necessary, officials will close the beaches.
A yellow flag is a warning to exercise caution when entering the water due to moderate rip currents. A green flag indicates hazardous conditions are lower than normal.
Officials are reminding beachgoers that the ocean is unpredictable, so always use caution, especially with children.
The police department will monitor traffic flow on Aquarius Street and other key intersections along Park Road 22, including Whitecap Boulevard, Commodores Drive, and the state highway. Motorists could experience delays and are advised to leave early for a destination.
The Texas Department of Transportation has reopened the Interstate 37 northbound Labonte Park exit ramp, which eliminates the need for motorists to use a northbound detour to access the park.
The Texas 358 (South Padre Island Drive) Ramp Reversal Project will pause lane closures for Spring Break in an effort to reduce traffic congestion during the holiday.
TxDOT has opened all travel lanes on the JFK Causeway Bridge, allowing traffic in two lanes in each direction separated by a traffic-control barrier. The four-lane traffic pattern is scheduled to continue until the week of March 21. During the week of March 28, motorists will once again have one travel lane open eastbound and one travel lane open westbound.
Port Aransas ferry operations will be at full capacity during Spring Break and are prepared to respond to any surge in late-night traffic. For the latest information and wait times, monitor the Port A Ferry’s Twitter feed.
City parks and swimming pools (Collier Pool and Natatorium) will be open with free admission.
