The work has finally begun to turn a decaying building at 817 N. Carancahua St. in Uptown Corpus Christi into Studio 21 Lofts. Stonewater Properties will spend $2.4 million to turn the building into 44 affordable loft apartments. In about 18 months, when the project is finished, the company will do the same at 723 Upper Broadway, which will become 44 apartments known as Broadway Lofts.
Combined with the planned conversion of the 600 Building into 126 apartments, the projects by Stonewater Properties will continue to make Uptown a full-time urban neighborhood, said Terry Sweeney, executive director of the Downtown Management District.
The apartment conversions are aimed at young workers who can’t afford much more than the under $500 a month rent for efficiency units at Studio 44. Bigger units will be available at Broadway Lofts but also priced affordably, said a spokesperson for the company.
The buildings will each include rooftop patios with a view of downtown. Studio 21 is expected to open in September 2018; Broadway Lofts in the last half of 2019.
