Recent announcements about the upcoming Fiesta de la Flor in Corpus Christi sent the Twitter-verse into a tizzy. Ecstatic tweets trumpeted news that Becky G and Desi Perkins will be part of the fourth annual Fiesta de la Flor, set for April 13-14 in North Bayfront Park in downtown Corpus Christi. The lineup was announced at a news conference Jan. 29.
Pop music sensation and actress Becky G will be part of the impressive lineup and also sit down with Suzette Quintanilla for a “One Person Unites Us” conversation. They will be joined by YouTube megastar and makeup artist Desi Perkins, whose video of her using M.A.C.’s Selena makeup line to turn herself into a Selena look-alike had almost 2 million views by the end of January. That number is bound to go up as festival dates draw near.
Also new this year: Kids Only Karaoke, where kids 13 and younger can get their “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” on for real, and the VIP ticket experience. Only $50, VIP tickets provide two-day entry into the festival, including special access to the Selena wax figure, VIP merchandise tents and beer stations. Avoid the lines and receive a limited-edition commemorative poster as well. Tickets are limited, according to the Corpus Christi Convention and Visitors Bureau, which organizes the festival each year.
Back by popular demand is the Selena wax figure from Madame Tussauds Hollywood. This year, the figure will be on display in the American Bank Center, where the line for Selena selfies, which was much longer than expected, can be entirely contained within an air-conditioned space.
Also returning, the Silent Disco with DJ El Dusty. Fans don headphones that can be tuned in to any number of lineups. The dance floor is filled with people dancing to their own beats.
This year’s lineup features The Mavericks, Los Palominos, Sunny Sauceda and Jonmikael Mrez on Friday night. Saturday’s headliners are Becky G and Elida Reyna. Other Saturday performers include Jenny and The Mexicats, Isabel Marie, Hometown Boys, LA 45, Jonmikael Mrez and Superfonicos.
The festival ends with a fireworks finale at 11:30 p.m. Saturday.
Before that, organizers have set up plenty to do over the two-day festival while listening to the music. Along with the El Parque Kids Zone, visitors can shop in El Mercado, eat from any number of food trucks at La Plaza and visit the McDonald’s Fiesta Tour: Annual Latin GRAMMY Experience, a 50-foot mobile exhibit honoring Latin music greats. The exhibit includes a recording studio, a photo booth, memorabilia displays and trivia games.
A free component of the festival this year, Selena Live — The Last Concert will be shown on the outside wall of the American Bank Center Selena Auditorium. The audience can lounge at the Watergardens fountain just outside the festival grounds to enjoy Selena’s and Los Dinos’s last performance together. Viewing begins at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
Tickets are available for purchase at Eventbrite.com. Fiesta de la Flor offers a two-day pass at $25 through Thursday, April 12. Individual day tickets for Friday and Saturday will be sold for $15 each through Thursday, April 12. On Friday, April 13, only individual day tickets will be available at the increased price of $20 for each day. Festival attendees may purchase tickets in person, in February, at select H-E-B Business Centers across the state.
Sponsors helping fund different sections of the event include CITGO, H-E-B, Herrman and Herrman, Stripes, The Outlets at Corpus Christi Bay, Chevy Dealers, L&F Distributors and Pepsi. Special partners include the American Bank Center, the city of Corpus Christi, Corpus Christi Mercantile, Corpus Christi Regional Transportation Authority, Iconic Sign Group, McDonald’s and SystemSeven.
