Two beloved state parks are back in business, just in time for Spring Break. Mustang Island State Park and Goose Island State Park reopen to visitors on Thursday, March 1.
Mustang Island State Park, one of the most pristine beaches in the Coastal Bend, was heavily impacted by Hurricane Harvey. While the beach itself weathered the storm, the park facilities and roads were badly damaged. The park was closed indefinitely as repairs were made.
In early February, the park announced on its Facebook page that it will be reopening for day use on March 1. Visitors can play in the sand, cast a fishing line and stroke the kayak and canoe paddling trails once again.
The park will close at sunset each day. Unfortunately, overnight camping is not allowed until further notice.
Goose Island State Park also reopens March 1 and will be able to accommodate overnight visitors. The wooded camping areas are open; reserve your spot on the park website. Guests can go birding in the picnic area and from viewing platforms, launch from the boat ramp and visit the centuries-old Big Tree, which remains unharmed after facing down 130-mph winds.
The hiking trails, fishing pier and beach camping areas remain closed due to significant hurricane damage.
Mustang Island State Park is located at 17047 Texas 361 in Port Aransas. Adult admission is $5 a day; children 12 and under get in free.
Goose Island State Park is located at 202 S. Palmetto St. in Rockport. Adult admission is $5 a day; children 12 and under get in free.
