Renowned as one of the most unique bike rides in Texas, Conquer the Coast just got even more unusual. The 2020 event, which raises money for leadership, empowerment, and scholarship programs, has gone virtual. Riders can pick their own routes and complete their chosen milage at their own pace.
The scenic, 66-mile route normally takes cyclists along Corpus Christi Bay, over the Harbor Bridge, across the Corpus Christi Ship Channel on the Port Aransas ferry, along Mustang Island, and onto Ocean Drive. That route is unavailable this year as are large group rides due to COVID-19.
The $50 registration fee includes a commemorative Conquer the Coast 2020 Ride Finisher Medal and a high-quality cycling jersey.
Registration is open now through Oct. 12. The event kickoff is Saturday, Sept. 12. Riders can create a virtual bib to be shared on social media with the hashtags #CTC2020 and #HEBHelpingHere. H-E-B is the main sponsor of the event.
The course can be completed over a span of days between Sept. 12 and Oct. 12. Distance and times must be submitted no later than 11:59 p.m. Oct. 12. Once the challenge is completed, riders can download a finisher certificate.
Conquer the Coast promotes cycling as an environmentally friendly, healthy lifestyle alternative to transportation and reminds riders to follow all traffic laws.
Proceeds benefit the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Islander Athletic Fund, which supports scholarships and sports operating budgets for student-athletes at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The ride also benefits the United Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Leadership Corpus Christi, Lemonade Day, Bikes for Kids, Bike Texas, and Mano a Mano scholarship program, all designed to develop the next generation of leaders and entrepreneurs. Refunds, transfers, and deferrals will not be issued.
