Four Corpus Christi nominees led 8-week heart health awareness classes

Rosaura De Los Santos Bailey was recently named the first Woman of Impact by the Corpus Christi office of the American Heart Association. Bailey is the director of Community Relations for the Port of Corpus Christi.
Nominees were chosen to participate in the Go Red for Women challenge. They included attorney Lindsay M. Browne, Alexa Gignac of Julian Gold, landscape artist Paulette Kluge, and Bailey.
The four were required to lead an eight-week heart health awareness campaign last spring that included training community members in CPR, raising money for the association, and organizing local events.
Bailey was determined by the AHA to have made the largest impact based on the level of community engagement as measured by community impact initiatives, spreading awareness, and raising funds.
Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer of women. One person dies every 36 seconds in the United States from cardiovascular disease, and about 655,000 Americans die from heart disease each year, or one in every four deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
In 2020, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal, Corpus Christi ranked No. 3 for the highest death rate increase from cardiovascular disease for ages 45-64 in major metro areas.
The American Heart Association drives local change in women’s heart health through prominent community volunteer-leaders.
