The Corpus Christi Army Depot recently opened its new Powertrain Transmission Assembling Building, completing Phase 2 of a seven-phase expansion, reconfiguration, and relocation of depot buildings past their prime. The powertrain building replaces a World War II-era structure that impeded workflow due to its inadequate size and air conditioning, among other problems.
“This new facility is a major step in assuring the long-term viability of the Depot and the sustainability of helicopter operations for the Department of Defense,” said Capt. Chris Jason, NASCC commanding officer.
CCAD is the U.S. Army’s premier helicopter repair, overhaul, and maintenance center. The largest industrial employer in South Texas, it is housed on Naval Air Station-Corpus Christi and is the air station’s largest tenant, occupying nearly 140 acres.
The 126,479-square-foot building cost $62.4 million to complete. The contract was issued in September 2017 and included demolishing seven Navy-owned buildings within the footprint of the CCAD project.
The new facility will house rotary wing aircraft component rebuild activities and infrastructure, including 25 bridge cranes. It is constructed on a raised level above the 100-year floodplain.
“The facility is a really huge win for the base and the Department of Defense because of what we do here for the Warfighter,” said Col. Joseph Parker, commander of the Corpus Christi Army Depot.
Naval Air Station-Corpus Christi and the Corpus Christi Army Depot are located at 11001 D Street in Corpus Christi.
