Corpus Christi Assistant City Manager Sylvia Carrillo-Treviño recently became one of two Latinas in Texas to be designated as a credentialed manager by the International City/County Management Association.
“I’m proud of my heritage and hope that I can inspire other women to join me in public service,” Carrillo-Treviño said. “There are very few women in the profession to begin with; something we are trying to change.”
She is now one of 1,300 local government management professionals currently credentialed through the ICMA Voluntary Credentialing Program.
“It has been a goal since the beginning,” Carrillo-Treviño said. “It joins me into a group of professionals who value integrity and value public service above all else. It’s an elite group that requires continuing education and a pledge to the ethical values the profession espouses.”
Carrillo-Treviño served as city manager for Aransas Pass before taking the Corpus Christi job in 2017. She has 16 years’ experience in professional local government executive experience. Currently, she shares city manager duties with fellow Assistant City Manager Mark Van Vleck and police Chief Mike Markle.
The city manager post has been vacant since former City Manager Margie C. Rose resigned March 15, 2018. The city hired a search firm in October to begin a nationwide hunt for a new leader. Eleven candidates have been identified out of 30 who have applied, Mayor Joe McComb announced at a City Council meeting Jan. 22.
