Corpus Christi residents are invited to the Seawater Desalination Workshop from 1:30-4:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, in Council Chambers at City Hall, 1201 Leopard St., for a detailed review of seawater desalination. Mayor Paulette M. Guajardo, City Manager Peter Zanoni, the City Council, and the city's water utility staff will be in attendance.
The city has been pursuing desalination since 2011 in an effort to provide a sustainable water source that is not dependent on freshwater sources. This is due to the potential for drought in the region as well as projected population growth. The permitting, studies, and approvals can take years to process.
In January 2020, the city of Corpus Christi filed permits of application for proposed desalination plants with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. The plants at Inner Harbor and La Quinta are proposed to divert up to 83.1 million gallons per day for Inner Harbor and 166.2 million gallons per day for La Quinta.
The July 21 forum will provide additional insight and new information following the first desalination workshop on April 26. The public may ask questions, and city staff will be on hand to answer and provide further insight. Concerns also may be expressed by submitting them online.
