Shell Canada’s carbon capture and storage project in northern Alberta. Canada-based Enbridge and Houston-based Oxy Low Carbon Ventures have proposed developing a carbon dioxide capture and storage hub near Corpus Christi.
Calgary-based Enbridge and Oxy Low Carbon Ventures of Houston are working together on a project that would develop a carbon dioxide sequestration hub in the Corpus Christi area.
The project would offer a solution to carbon dioxide emitters in the area by developing a pipeline transportation system and sequestration facility. Enbridge would build and operate the pipeline and OLCV the sequestration facilities. The two companies would jointly market the services to potential clients.
Carbon capture and storage technology involves capturing CO2 before it enters the atmosphere and transporting it to an underground sequestration facility. According to the Global CCS Institute, 24 such facilities currently operate worldwide, 12 in the United States.
Enbridge is a multinational energy company that transports about 30 percent of crude oil produced in North America and nearly 20 percent of the natural gas consumed in the United States.
OLCV is a subsidiary of longtime energy firm Occidental Petroleum Corp., which has been headquartered in Houston since 2014.
Neither company has offered a cost estimate or a timeline for the proposed project.
