An abandoned building at Bill Witt Park on Corpus Christi’s Southside, along with two other structures, is due to be torn down as part of a $460,000 renovation plan.
A new dog park could be part of major renovations planned for two Corpus Christi parks. Parts of a $16 million bond passed by voters in 2012 will fund upgrades to Bill Witt Park on the Southside and West Guth Park in Calallen.
In Bill Witt Park, the city plans to demolish three abandoned buildings. New additions to the park include a dog park, an open-air pavilion, a new and upgraded irrigation system, a hike-and-bike trail, and an expansion of and upgrade to the sports fields, including possible fencing. Total cost is estimated at about $465,000.
A much-anticipated addition, the dog park will be the second in the city. The first, which just recently opened, is in Water’s Edge Park downtown by the seawall.
West Guth Park is set for $1 million in upgrades that include a 2,200-square-foot pavilion, a renovated pool, a walkway, and an updated irrigation system. Other work planned includes landscaping along with new, shaded trails. New tee pads, signage, and removable baskets will be added to the 18-hole disk golf course. Two new horseshoe courts could also be added.
Improvements at West Guth Park could be completed by December as bids were accepted by City Council for the project earlier in May.
Other parks due to benefit from the 2012 bond funds include Westside’s Salinas Park, Flour Bluff’s Parker Park, and downtown’s Artesian and La Retama parks. At a recent meeting, City Council awarded a service agreement to install new playground equipment at Salinas Park for $202,129.
Request for bids have been issued for the Bill Witt Park improvements.
