The Corpus Christi City Council unanimously approved nearly $1 million in grants for the Corpus Christi-Nueces County Public Health District. Funding comes from the Texas Department of State Health Services.
Grants for STD/HIV Prevention Services and HIV Surveillance received the largest funding with more than $300,000 awarded. Over $200,000 each will support immunizations, emergency preparedness laboratory services, and public health emergency preparedness efforts.
Operation of the Public Health District was officially transferred to the city of Corpus Christi on March 1 after months of negotiation between the city and county. Most cities of Corpus Christi’s size manage their own health departments.
The council proposed the changeover in October 2021 for better use of taxpayer dollars, a better work environment for employees, and better health outcomes for those who are underserved and uninsured in and around the Coastal Bend, according to a city media statement.
